I wonder what the lottery machine that Moyes uses to pick the centrebacks will produce for this match?

Hopefully from the lottery machine of fit ones.

I really need us to do this lot, incidentally.

And the full backs. I find a lot of his line ups and substitutions utterly baffling.

In and out and not necessarily on form either, strictly speaking. I am also starting to wonder if Cresswell has some sort of appearance clause or bonus in his contract, the amount of times he's unnecessarily coming on with a few minutes to go in matches. Or if Emerson has some sort of weird bonus for completing 90 mins of matches.

We should have enough to beat them no matter who we put out. Apart, that is, from Johnson. He has been appalling the last few games.

I'd be sticking out a good lineup for the first half at least, they weren't as shit as we expected and we were much shitter than expected. One half decent performance against arsenal has not convinced me we've turned a corner. Moyes is still here.

If we eventually win this competition, and get upgraded to EUFA League next season does that mean that whoever finishes 6 in the premiership this season don’t get into Europe next season or does that give England an additional team?

Yes.

Gaffer

It is a extra spot I believe. So no we can't push anyone out of Europe.

"The winner of UEFA Europa Conference League is guaranteed a place in UEFA Europa League group stages. If a Premier League club win the UEFA Europa Conference League and do not qualify for the UEFA Europa League via the Premier League or the FA Cup, then they enter the UEFA Europa League group stages as an additional club."

I'm not sure it is possible any more but in theory England can have 9 teams in Europe.

Apart from Johnson the rest of the squad should be able to win this at home.

Strongest team which is Rice and Bowen plus nine others.

Perhaps it's because, along with Fornals (definitely), Lanzani (probably) and Rice (on a good day) he's about the only player in the squad with even an ounce of football brain. There's certainly no other defender.

Of course, on that basis, you'd wonder why Emerson is selected at all, so most likely it's just random Moyes fuckwittery

IoC

I'm not saying you're wrong, but the way that's punctuated is ambiguous. It could mean the Conference League winner goes straight into the Europa League at the group stage and the team that finishes 6th gets bounced from the Europa qualifying to the Conference.

I seem to recall there's a cap on the total number of EPL teams that can qualify for Europe, but it may have changed.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Gent - Official Match Thread - Preview
There is a cap, I think it's nine.

Surface , I agree Cresswell is one of our more intelligent players and has been a very good player over his 8 or 9 years at tge club. His issue for a while is simply age catching up. He will be a liability if played regularly as first choice. Emerson is a wing back and imo was one of the few new players that had started to improve with regular game time. But he’s a wing back and he was one becoming one of the few that was getting behind defences etc

But after the Newcastle game, Moyes decided, and has arguably been justified , in going back to his old guard and approach.

Emerson is a better passer of the ball, quicker but his weakness is the defensive side of the game. Positional issues, aerially mostly.

In a team that was doing well, having more possession and playing to feet, at pace etc and Emerson is the obvious choice.

Cresswell is suited to the way we have started to play again now that Moyes has abandoned trying to play out from the back etc. For me ( opinion only ) Moyes has effectively shown he cannot and does not know how to get a team to play another way and the summer additions, aside from Paqueta, have been a waste of money. Buying more technical players to transform the way you play doesn’t work unless you believe in that way of playing, set up that way and know how to coach and develop players and team to play that way.

Anyone who thinks this will be easy needs to get real. They can play and have threat. We need to score two early ideally by going after it.
